Join the Saint Nicholas Center for Faith and Justice – Virginia Theological Seminary
Date: May 23, 2025
The mission of the Saint Nicholas Center for Faith and Justice is to support the formation of Christian leaders as faithful and effective advocates for justice in the way of Jesus. God’s gracious action in Jesus Christ turns our world upside down. Because of God’s loving concern for us, we are freed to practices of care and solidarity that witness that love to the world. Sharing that witness faithfully and effectively is the work of the center. Given our current national politics—the rise of authoritarianism, the resurgence of White Christian Nationalism, the cascading crises of climate change, the vilification of the vulnerable—the center’s launch couldn’t be timelier.
While these wider political dynamics set the context for our work, the day-to-day work of the center aligns with the mission of VTS to form Christian leaders. And the work of formation is relational, slow, and small. It’s vocational work and therefore involves the careful listening I discussed earlier this week.
In the past academic year, we’ve been able to accomplish a lot. We’ve hired and trained Saint Nicholas Fellows, whose testimonies we’ve heard in the commentaries this week. We’ve hosted Faith and Justice lunches with leaders from across the DMV. We’ve rejoined as a member of the Virginians Organized for Interfaith and Community Engagement (VOICE) and taken a delegation to participate in the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy’s Day for All People. We’ve utilized VTS’s beautiful campus to host summits for Alexandria’s homeless service providers and for Faith and Labor leaders from across Northern Virginia.
But this is just the beginning. We’re looking forward to officially launching the center in September 2025. We’ll continue to connect students to Christian leaders and faith based organizing campaigns across the DMV. I’ll teach a new intensive this January 2026, the Justice Praxis Seminar, that will entail a week-long immersion in the theology and skills of advocacy during the Virginia General Assembly in Richmond.
I hope you’ll consider contributing to this shared work. Come to our events. Make a donation to VTS on our behalf. Welcome a seminarian to share their testimony with your congregation. Share your vision with us. Join us in the work of witnessing to the way of Jesus, a way of faith with justice.
