Hundreds of faith leaders representing millions of American Christians and other religious traditions will gather near the U.S. Capitol next Tuesday, June 10, to urge Senators to reject cuts to programs like Medicaid and SNAP proposed in the GOP budget bill. The event is titled the “Moral Budget Vigil.”
According to a statement issued by organizers, participating clergy will “offer prayers, sing songs, read scripture and testify to the Gospel, providing a moral reckoning at this critical moment in history.”
The gathering is being organized by the Georgetown University Center on Faith and Justice, Sojourners, Skinner Leadership Institute and the National African American Clergy Network. Among the speakers will be Bishop Mariann Budde of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, the Rev. Jim Wallis of Georgetown University Center on Faith and Justice, and Dr. Barbara Williams-Skinner of the National African American Clergy Network. After the vigil, religious leaders will meet with senators on the Capitol steps and in their offices.
The budget, which the White House has labeled its “Big Beautiful Bill,” cleared the House in May with a narrow margin. Among other actions, the legislation would make the 2017 tax cuts permanent, and, according to many analysts across the political spectrum, it would add trillions to the national debt.
Most notable for the faith leaders organizing the Moral Budget Vigil, the legislation would likely push millions of the most vulnerable Americans off the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid, which provides health insurance for low-income children, families and people with disabilities.
According to the organizers’ statement, “Stripping support from the nation’s most vulnerable communities in order to cut taxes for the rich is a moral tradeoff that followers of Jesus must not accept.”
Mitch Randall, Good Faith Media’s CEO and director of the Faith and Democracy Initiative, has expressed support for the vigil. “I am proud to stand by my fellow clergy members to encourage Congress to provide funding for essential programs,” he said. Following the example of Jesus, my Christian faith compels me to advocate for the poor, sick, hungry, and marginalized.”
