As Donald Trump celebrates 100 days, Michigan's Shri Thanedar seeks his impeachment – Detroit Free Press
U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar, of Michigan, on Tuesday introduced a resolution to impeach President Donald Trump for a third time.
In a news release on April 28 Thanedar said he was introducing an impeachment resolution citing “a sweeping abuse of power, flagrant violations of the Constitution, and acts of tyranny that undermine American democracy and threaten the rule of law.”
“Trump’s attacks on due process, birthright citizenship, humanitarian aid, and the courts are not ‘politics.’ They are a direct attack on our democracy,” Thanedar said in a Facebook post. “Enough is enough — I am introducing articles of impeachment against him.”
The resolution introduced by Thanedar likely be referred to the referred to the House Judiciary Committee, which is under the majority control of Trump’s Republican Party — as is the U.S. House as a whole and the Senate as well. It unlikely any further action will take place regarding the resolution.
“Donald Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he is unfit to serve as president and represents a clear and present danger to our nation’s constitution and our democracy,” Thanedar said. “His unlawful actions have subverted the justice system, violated the separation of powers and placed personal power and self-interest above public service.”
Thanedar, who represents Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, is facing challenges for reelection from at least two members of his own party next year.
Trump this week celebrated his 100th day in office during his second term with a rally in Michigan.
Here’s everything to know about the Michigan congressman who filed a resolution seeking to impeach Trump.
The resolution includes seven articles of impeachment outlining a range of constitutional violations:
Impeachment is the process of bringing charges against a government official for wrongdoing, according to USA.gov.
In Congress, members of the House can vote by simple majority to impeach a president or federal official. Action then turns to the Senate, where a trial, overseen by a member of the Supreme Court, would require a two-thirds majority to remove a person from office.
Yes, Trump was impeached twice by a Democratic-led U.S. House, in February 2020 and February 2021 — after he was out of office. The Senate acquitted him of the charges in both cases.
Judge G. Thomas Porteous Jr. was removed in 2010, the Library of Congress said.
Porteous was a federal district court judge for the Eastern District of Louisiana, starting in 1994. In 2008, the U.S. Judicial Conference determined that Porteous had committed judicial misconduct. He was accused of having a corrupt financial relationship with a law firm involved in a case on his docket and improperly denying a motion to recuse himself from that matter, of being involved in corrupt conduct with bail bondsmen, and of making material false statements and representations under penalty of perjury related to his personal bankruptcy filing.
A sitting U.S. Congressman, Thanedar is seeking a third two-year term.
Thanedar represents Michigan’s 13th district, which primarily includes Detroit and parts of the surrounding suburbs.
State Rep. Donavan McKinney and former state Sen. Adam Hollier, will both run against Thanedar in the Democratic primary in 2026.
Born in India, Thanedar, 70, was elected in Congress in 2022, according to the Detroit Regional Chamber. He became a U.S. citizen in 1988.
Before serving in Congress, Thanedar served in the Michigan House of Representatives.
Thanedar, an author and entrepreneur came to the U.S. in 1979 to pursue a doctorate at the University of Akron.
Additionally in 1991, Thanedar bought Chemir/Polytech Laboratories.
By 2005, the company’s total revenues were $16 million, and 160 people were employed, according to the Detroit Regional Chamber.
Then in 2011, he sold Chemir, launched his own chemical testing laboratory, Avomeen Analytical Services and in 2016, sold a majority stake in the business to the private equity firm High Street Capital.
He is the first Indian American in Congress from Michigan, media reports show.
