First Lutheran Church is hosting the multi-faith advocacy session aiming to restore refugee resettlement. (Carson Hughes – StPeterHerald.com)
When President Donald Trump was inaugurated on Jan. 20, one of his first actions upon returning to White House was to suspend the resettlement of refugees in the United States as part of a series of executive orders cracking down on immigration.
Established in 1980, the program has provided millions of people fleeing war, natural disaster or persecution with a legal pathway to migrate to the United States. The program’s pause has affected over 600,000 refugees whose claims were being processed at the time of the program’s suspension.
