Arkansas's four congressmen champion passage of Trump's 'big beautiful' bill – thv11.com

LITTLE ROCK, Ark — All four of Arkansas’s Republican congressmen voted early on Thursday to approve President Donald Trump’s legislative package dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” that combines spending cuts, border funding, tax changes, and more.
The bill, which exceeds 1,000 pages, was passed in a late night 215-214 vote with concessions to Republican holdouts and a final round of revisions before reaching the House floor.
The legislative package includes making the 2017 tax cuts permanent as well as eliminating taxes on some tips and overtime. The Associated Press notes that several provisions, including tax breaks for tips, are temporary and will expire at the end of 2028 unless extended.
Congressman French Hill (R-2) called the package’s passage a “major” victory that “delivers real results.” Hill claimed this bill would prevent the “largest tax hike in American history.”
“It reflects tried and true conservative, pro-growth principles — spending discipline, tax relief, and restoring the integrity of programs that many Arkansans rely on like Medicaid and SNAP,” he said. “It also sends a clear signal that House Republicans are serious about governing and delivering results for our constituents and for the American people.”
Congressman Bruce Westerman (R-4) praised the months-long work by Republicans to deliver on their campaign promises.
“It’s time for Congress to put America first, and I am proud to have played a role in this process to deliver on our promise to the American people,” he said.
The Republican legislation also reduces SNAP spending by roughly $267 billion over 10 years and expands work requirements to get food aid.
Funding for spending in the Medicaid program would be reduced by as much as $700 billion, according to the Congressional Budget Office. New requirements beginning at the end of 2026 include “community engagement requirements,” where any able-bodied adult without a dependent would either need to meet 80 hours per month of “work, education, or service.”
Congressman Steve Womack (R-3) said the bill ensures SNAP and Medicaid are accessible and effective “for those who truly need them.” Womack approved of the bill’s efforts to strengthen national security efforts and hoped the Senate would pass the legislation swiftly.
Rep. Rick Crawford (R-1) echoed his fellow congressmen and said House Republicans with this bill “are putting Americans’ hard-earned money back into their pockets” and that the legislative package was done in a “fiscally responsible manner.”
The Arkansas Democratic Party said that the four congressmen “voted to devastate Arkansas families” in order to “appease Donald Trump and his billionaire backers.”
They furthered their criticism by noting that one in 13 Arkansans rely on SNAP benefits and 813,000 receive Medicaid help.
“Make no mistake: Arkansas Democrats will keep fighting for expanded access to healthcare and SNAP benefits in Arkansas,” said Arkansas Democratic Party Chair Grant Tennille. “And we will make it a priority to ensure Natural State voters have the knowledge to hold every Republican loyal to billionaires accountable at the ballot box.”
The bill will now head to the Senate. To read more on what is in the bill, please click here.
