Thanks to expansive City-mandated protections for its LGBTQ+ citizens, Philadelphia ranks in the country’s top 25 rainbow-friendliest cities. But that doesn’t mean all the work is done to ensure protections for all of our LGBTQ+ neighbors.
There are still rampant inequalities in the workplace. LGBTQ+ people — especially Black transgender women — are facing an increase in hate crimes. And young people still face the risk of being kicked out of their homes because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Yes, there is still a lot of work to be done. And thankfully there are tons of awesome LGBTQ+ organizations in Philadelphia working toward the changes we need — from nonprofits serving LGBTQ+ youth and shelters fighting homelessness within the community to health centers providing the care and resources needed to keep LGBTQ people safe, healthy and thriving.
Want to do your part to further the movement? Start by supporting the local organizations that are uplifting our LGBTQ+ citizens and working to move the needle on civil rights and social justice. Here, more than 15 LGBTQ organizations in Philadelphia to support with time, money or maybe even a simple retweet or shoutout post on social media.
